When is Passover 2008 - Pesach 5768 (2008)?

פסח תשס"ח

Passover this years 2008, starts on the eve of Saturday, April 19, 2008. Sunday, April 20 2008 is the first day of Passover. Note that in the Jewish calendar, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Jews will start celebrating Passover on the sundown of Saturday, the 19th of April. The Seder (Passover Jewish religious ceremony performed on the first and second night of Passover) is performed Saturday and Sunday nights.

Please note: Pesach 5768 (2008) is one of the years when the day before Passover falls on Shabbat. (ערב פסח שחל בשבת)

We have to burn the Chametz שריפת חמץ this year on the day before ערב פסח, since ערב פסח is on a Saturday. That is on April 18 this year. Remember to burn the Chametz by 11:34AM on Friday, April 18, 2008. Any left over Chametz needed for Shabbat should be put away in a safe place away from kids or animals and must be consumed by Saturday morning, April 19, 2008 before 10:14AM.

The first two and last two days of the Passover calendar are Yom Tov days (full holy days). This year the first 2 holy days will be on April 20 and 21. The last 2 holy days will be on April 26 and April 27.

The 3rd to 6th days of the Passover calendar are the intermediate days (Chol HaMoed - half holy days) or middle days of the Passover holiday for Jews who celebrate Passover.

On the first day of Passover it is customer to pray for "Tal" (Dew) מברכים טל. There is a special prayer said before Mussaf מוסף to state the end of saying משיב הרוח ומורד הגשם and the start of the spring and summer season when we only say מוריד הטל.  It's a special prayer for dew said during the repetition of the Musaf Amidah on on the first day of Pesach. It heralds the omission of the words Mashiv Haruach Umorid Hageshem from the Amidah prayer. Some communities replace Mashiv Haruach Umorid Hageshem with the words Morid Hatal following this prayer.

On the 8th day of Passover, it is custom to say “Yizkor” יזכור, or Remembrance of the Souls also called the "Memorial Prayers" service for those who have a parent or loved one who passed away. The Yizkor יזכור prayer asks Hashem to remember the soul of a departed relative. The Yizkor יזכור prayer is recited individually for each departed close relative. The name of the deceased is mentioned in the prayer. The prayer includes a pledge to make a donation to charity.
